This semester, the Bonvicini Class at the Universität der Künste (UDK) has been immersed in a collaborative project with the Friends of the Berliner Ensemble. Our goal? To propose a public sculpture that honors the legacy of Helene Weigel, a pivotal figure in German theater.

Helene Weigel was a trailblazer in her own right, known not only for her artistic partnership with Brecht but also for her independent contributions to the theatrical world. As a prominent actress and director, she played a crucial role in the development of the Berliner Ensemble.
Our class, guided by the innovative vision of Bonvicini, set out to create a public work that could stand as a testament to Weigel's contributions. Throughout the semester, we worked closely with the Friends of the Berliner Ensemble, gathering insights and reflecting on how best to encapsulate her spirit in a sculpture. This process has been a deeply enriching experience, not only in terms of artistic exploration but also in engaging with the historical and cultural significance of Weigel’s life and work.
The proposed sculpture will seek to blend both abstract and representational elements to create a dynamic and thought-provoking tribute.
We aim to symbolize Weigel's strength, resilience, and artistic vision through the interplay of form, light, and materials—focusing on creating a piece that invites public interaction and reflection.
This collaboration has been an incredible opportunity for all involved. As we approach the final stages of the project, we are excited to see how our collective vision will contribute to the public memory of Helene Weigel. We hope that the proposed sculpture will stand as a permanent reminder of her profound influence on German theater and her lasting legacy within the arts.
